Obituary for Raymond A. Clayton

Raymond A. Clayton, age 96, passed away on February 12, 2019 at Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehab. He lived at The Pointe at Solarbron. Raymond was born in Shawneetown, Illinois on June 19, 1922. He was the son of Henry Standford and Hattie S. Clayton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Vera Mae (Curtis) Clayton; a sister, Mary F. Brauser; and brothers, William H., Millard F., Lowell R., Charles B., and Russel Clayton.

Surviving are his children, Michael R. (Barbara) of Fort Wayne, IN, Linda Connor of Titusville, FL, David J. (Sharlene) of Kingston, TN and Cathi Pardon (Scott) of Evansville, IN; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, along with his special friend, Diane Masterson.

Raymond served four years in the US Navy in the Atlantic Theater during World War II. While in the service, Raymond was involved in three D-Day invasions. Upon his return to Indiana he started his career selling insurance and has remained in this profession until his death.

During his lifetime, Raymond was Noble Grand of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a Boy Scout leader, 4H leader, Sunday school teacher at Old North Methodist Church, taught insurance classes at Ivy Tech and was Past Secretary Distinguished and Distinguished President of Northside Kiwanis and Lt. Governor Distinguished of Southwind Division and retained perfect attendance for 66 years. Raymond was named Kiwanian of the Year for Southwind Division. Raymond served for 3 years as Board of Governors of Riley Hospital and was awarded Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003 by Governor F. O'Bannon. Raymond was named Best Dressed Man in Indiana in 1970 by the American Mensware Association. He was honored to go on the Honor Flight in October of 2017.

Raymond enjoyed fishing, boating, water skiing, hunting and telling stories (whether they were true or not).

He was a member of Forest Hills Wesleyan Church on the west side of Evansville.

The family would like to thank the staff at the nursing facility and Deaconess VNA Hospice for their kind care.

A celebration of Raymond's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Browning Funeral Home 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711 with Pastor Ray Austin officiating.

Friends may visit from 9:00 AM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN, 30 S. Meridian St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
