Founding of Browning Funeral Home
By Charles H Browning and Dolores DeWitt Browning

As we celebrate our 54th year in business we want to share with you the history of our beginnings.  Upon return from World War II, Charles settled into married life with Dolores and he entered mortuary school in 1946.  Little did they know they were embarking on a journey that bore unrelenting challenges.  With two little children at home and one on the way at the age of 31 Charles and Dolores took a monumental step.  They built Browning Funeral Home on Diamond Avenue.  The responsibilities of a new business that demanded 24/7 became an immediate reality.  Giving from the heart their endeavor was no longer a job… it was a mission and a labor of love.  Their daughter Jeannie joined the family as a licensed funeral director in 1982 and brought with her a new vision and a bright new future to the business.  In 1997 their daughter Charleen joined the family business with her many talents.  We have grown through the years and have become Evansville’s largest family owned and operated facility.

Our philosophy---to care with compassion, understanding and empathy will continue for generations to come.
