Obituary:Leo J. Voegel, 84, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Leo was born in Cynthiana, Indiana on July 19, 1928 to the late Francis and Catherina (Ruch) Voegel. He worked as a truck driver for F. J. Folz Ready Mix Concrete for 29 years and later for Evansville Concrete for 2 years. Leo retired from the Teamsters Union. He served in the United States Marines during the Korean War where he was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He survived the Chosin Reservoir , becoming one of the "Frozen Chosin."
Leo was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, the Evansville Athletic Club and the Marine Corps. League. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1114, American Legion Eugene Pate Post 265, Twin Towers and Southern Indiana Antique Machinery.
Leo is survived by his daughter, Denise Gallant (Richard) of Haubstadt, IN; sons, Kevin Voegel (Susan) of Evansville, IN, Paul Voegel (Monica) of Evansville, IN, Darrin Voegel (Kim) of Evansville, IN, Patrick Voegel (Farah) of Evansville, IN; brothers, Bill Voegel of Evansville, IN, Leonard Voegel (Midge) of Evansville, IN; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Leo is preceded in death by his wife, Mona Sue (Swatsley) Voegel in 2008, great grandson, Andrew Riggins, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and his parents.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711 with Father John Breidenbach officiating. Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Cemetery, Poseyville, Indiana where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Monday, August 13, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home.
