Obituary:George Andrew Benner, 91, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Friday, July 27, 2012 at River Pointe Health Campus.
George was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana on September 6, 1920 to the late Andrew and Barbara (Fellemende) Benner. He graduated from Baker Grade School and Central High School in 1938. George worked for Goeke's Department Store before enlisting into the United States Army in 1941. In 1942, he became a Corporal in the 353rd Medical Detachment of Engineers, where he served as a medic in the South Pacific. In 1947, he married Irene (Long) Benner, who had been in his class throughout grade school and high school. George and Irene moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where they lived for 47 years. They co-owned and operated Clement-Benner Department Store in Los Alamos. He was a commander for the American Legion Funkhouser Post, a member of the VFW Post #1114, Hadi Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Club and a 40 year member of Chamber of Commerce in Los Alamos. After 44 years in New Mexico they were glad to move back to Evansville to reconnect with family and friends. George was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church.
George is survived by: sister-in-law, Joyce Benner of Evansville; nieces and nephews, Marilyn Solliday; Delores Rowans; Jack Benner (Irene); Charles Benner (Hattie); Sharon Benner; Skip Kunkler (Mary); Randy Benner (Peggy); Susie Atherton; Sara Craven (Mike) and Lisa Grimm (Dan); numerous great nieces and great nephews and friends.
George is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Irene Wilma (Long) Benner.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 30, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home 738 Diamond Ave. with Rev. Doug Heiman officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery where military rites will be held.
Friends may visit from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Monday, July 30, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home.
