Obituary:
Barbara Ruth Sullivan, 88, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the University of Louisville Medical Center.

Barbara was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on June 23, 1923 to the late Claude and Nellie (Farley) Laney. She graduated from Indiana State University in Terre Haute in 1945, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. Barbara was a school teacher for 21 years; she began her teaching career in 1943 in Terre Haute and moved to Evansville in 1951, where she taught at Memorial High School for 19 years. She was an active member of St. Benedict Cathedral, where she sang in the choir. She was also PTA President at St. Benedict's School. Barbara was a member of the Three Arts Society and integrated the organization for Wives of School Teachers. She was also an avid bowler.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 67 years, Edmund A. Sullivan of Evansville; sons, Ronald J. Sullivan and his wife, Linda, of Oak Ridge, TN, and Kevin Sullivan and his wife, Melanie, of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, James Sullivan, Sean Sullivan, and Anna Sullivan; and her special friend, Mary Dixon.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Richard Laney and Robert Laney.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave. with Father Gregory Chamberlin officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.


Friends may visit from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Saturday May 12, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home.

The family is establishing an endowment in Barbara’s name through the Catholic Foundation of Southwestern Indiana to benefit the students of Reitz Memorial High School where she taught for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent through Browning Funeral Home.
