History

Browning Funeral HomeFounding of Browning Funeral Home
By: Charles H. Browning & Dolores DeWitt Browning

As we celebrate our 60th year in business, we want to share with you the history of our beginnings. Upon return from World War II, Charles settled into married life with Dolores and entered mortuary school in 1946. Little did they know, they were embarking on a journey that bore unrelenting challenges. With two little children at home and one on the way at the age of 31, Charles and Dolores took a monumental step. They built Browning Funeral Home on Diamond Avenue. The responsibilities of a new business that demanded 24/7 became an immediate reality. Giving from the heart, their endeavor was no longer a job…it was a mission and a labor of love. Their daughter Jeannie joined the family as a licensed funeral director in 1982 and brought with her a new vision and a bright new future to the business. In 1997, their daughter Charleen joined the family business with her many talents. Jeannie Browning-Hester is now CEO and Owner/Operator of Browning Funeral Home. She keeps the spirit of Charles Browning alive through her generous and loving heart not only here at the funeral home, but within the Evansville community. Browning Funeral home has grown through the years and has since become Evansville’s largest family-owned and operated facility.

Our philosophy is to care for others with compassion, understanding and empathy, and will continue to for generations to come.
